Adult ticks prefer larger mammals such as white-tailed deer. After the ticks feed, they mate on or off the host and then the female lays her eggs.

Habitat

Adult ticks are most abundant during warm seasons. The Blacklegged Deer tick prefers overgrown yards and vacant lots, fields, wooded areas, weedy roadsides, and edges of paths and hiking trails. They wait for a host to brush against the vegetation, then crawls to a suitable place to attach themselves and feed.
