Habitat

These insects live in the top six feet of moist soil underneath buildings, sidewalks, fire wood, or anything else that can be used as a shelter. A colony may make their nest of rocks, twigs, and dirt, or even your potted plants. They relocate their nests based on food sources, temperature, and soil moisture. Argentine ants can be found in all the Southern states and can survive in colder environments throughout the United States.

Health Risk

They do not pose a serious health threat, but they can contaminate food.

Property Damage

Also, tending to be a nuisance, they deposit trails continuously in search of food.

Prevention

Eliminate standing water and move items, such as firewood and building materials away from your home or building.

Eradication

Workers are good at finding sweets in the structure so a sweet ant bait would work. The most effective control is accomplished when,

• Ant trails are followed to the nest and treated with a residual insecticide .
• Exterior nest should be drenched with a liquid pesticide.
• Nest in wall voids are more easily treated by aerosol injection CB 80 Aerosol or application of a dust formulation Tempo 1% Insecticide Dust.
• Can't locate the nest? Then use a microencapsulated Onslaught Microencapsulated Liquid Insecticide or wetable powder applied to:
  • foundations
  • plants
  • soil adjacent to the building
