Habitat

They nest within structures in the walls of homes and offices. Their colonies are established under sidewalks and roadways. They build large mound nests in landscape areas and against the walls of your foundation. Health Risks

Red Imported Fire Ants are best known for their sting. When disturbed, they respond rapidly and aggressively.  This is just one reason why it is important to get rid of fire ants.  A single ant can sting repeatedly and will continue to sting even after its venom sac is depleted. The sting initially causes an intense burning sensation, followed by itching, and then redness to the area. They can pose life-threatening health risks for people who are hypersensitive or allergic to insect stings.

Property Damage

Outside, fire ants can damage cultivated plants in your garden; eating seeds from crops and the buds of developing fruits. Young citrus and pecan trees can be destroyed when moving into the stems and trunks. They are attracted to electrical currents and can cause considerable damage to heat pumps, air conditioners, and telephone junction boxes outside your home or business.

Prevention

Here are some techniques used on the extermination of fire ants. Eliminate sources of moisture, seal cracks around your foundation, windows seals, and doors and keep wood materials away from your home. Cutting back bushes and branches will also eliminate sources of entry to your home.

Eradication

Fire ants sometimes forage for food in structures.You can help stop this by applying barriers sprays to the soil and foundations of the buildings. Talstar One (See below)

Nest often require several treatments. Direct mound injection and drenches with Talstar One can be successful and in some cases eliminate the colony. However baits that contain an insect growth regulator (IGR) and a slow acting stomach poison, Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait, are more successful in eliminating colonies. 7 to 10 days after using the IGR bait spray the immediate area in order to kill foraging workers.
